“Wonderchamber: Austro-German music in the Stylus Phantasticus”

Karin Cuéllar Rendón, the young Bolivian violinist specializing in Historical Performance at the Royal Academy of Music, will be accompanied this evening by theorbo player Sergio Buchelli. Harpsichordist Benedict Williams who accompanied Karin at the XII Renaissance & Baroque Music Festival of the Chiquitos Missions in Bolivia in April of this year to perform “Wonderchamber” will talk about how the festival proved a transformative experience for both, then Annie Copponex, who helped start the landmark festival in 1996, will share her anecdotes and memories.

The Stylus Phantasticus was a compositional style of the XVII century that originated in Italy with the toccatas and fantasias of Claudio Merulo and Girolamo Frescobaldi, and was later adopted by German and Austrian composers such as Heinrich Ignaz Biber and Johann Schmeltzer among others.

This style is characterized by a free structure with elements of improvisation and fantasy. Such elements can be heard in “Annunciation” the first of the Mystery of the Rosary Sonatas. In “Sonata Representativa” on the other hand, Biber seeks to represent animals and musketeers, while in “La Cesta” by Mealli and “Sonata Quarta” by Schmeltzer, the fantastic element is conveyed through multi-sections contrasting in tempo and musical and rhythmic content.

Karin Cuéllar Rendon is a Bolivian violinist specialising in Historical Performance at the Royal Academy of Music. She is currently a beneficiary of both the San Marino and the Vincent Meyer scholarships and is pursuing an Advanced Diploma under the guidance of Maggie Faultless.

Pedro Ximenez Abrill Tirado was a Peruvian composer from the end of the 18th century and beginning of the 19th century. He is one of the biggest exponents of the Classical and early Romantic styles in South America, for which he has been compared with W.A. Mozart. Ximenez’ music, however, incorporates folkloric elements from Peruvian and Bolivian traditional music into a predominantly European musical aesthetic. His work, therefore, has become an important source for the study of the music scene in South America in the time of the early Republics.
